My recent travels include South Africa, where I combined a visit to a laboratory in Johannesburg with a 58-mile ultramarathon and a visit to a wild animal preserve; a trek in Nepal to the Everest base camp; and, for the Millennium, a trip to Timbuktu in Mali, West Africa. My goal is to visit all seven continents. Only Australia and Antarctica remain on my list. I have been running since 1972 and am living proof that brain cells die before muscle cells, which explains why runners continue to abuse themselves year after year. Triathlons involve swimming, bicycling, and running in succession. This athletic endeavor is for those of us who seek new, novel ways of self-torture. Actually, it's a lot of fun. My wife, Pam, likes to run and do triathlons, too. The highlight of my athletic career was to complete the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon at age 52. The Ironman is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26-mile run fun, huh? In addition to a wife, I have a wonderful dog, Maggie Mae (see photo) a five-year old Yellow Lab. Maggie likes toys and always wants to play. She's still a puppy at heart. Pam and I are building a cabin in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, and we hope to have it finished by November. We'll have plenty of room up there, so “Y'all come down and visit us, y'hear!” |
